For Della

by Brittany Gardner
Mother and daughter in front of pink background

She gave you to me,
a mirror
A way to see Her, myself,
in you

A challenge to love
my self-loathing

For presented in you
it is pure
innocent
TRYING

To remind my fire
to diffuse and purify
rather than consume

From time to time
I get too close
flames grow too hot
too tall
too angry

And you mirror
to show me who I really am:
a lonely little girl seeking her Mother
needing Her peace
calm reassurance

But also
to show me
who I could be

Will my fire ever know
your peace like a river?

“Yes,” She whispers
“For I gave her to you.”
