Mother Tongue

by Ashley Sturgill

She needed poetry
to heal and make right,
nature showed her the way.
Nature needed poetry
to weave and make flight,
Mother showed her the way.

I found my voice
from Her black capped chickadee curiosity sparked
by Her sparrow.
Tools given shrewdly
by coy magpie,
from Her red tailed hawk
stillness borrowed.
To my sorrow Her tawny grey
dove stood witness.

Golden threads of a language
veiled and forgotten
taught by our Mother
they weave through the sky
the birds wings down to me-
the loving lost words
I’m relearning to speak.
