Oh God, the Eternal Mother

by Charlotte Scholl Shurtz

Oh God, the Eternal Mother,

as you watch us bow our heads

then eat the bread and water,

does it hurt to remember

your Son’s bloody sweat in the garden

and his mangled body on the cross?

Do you rejoice to hear us promising

to always remember your Son,

even as we forget you?

Do you want us to forget?

Or are you the Spirit

who is always with us,

guiding and warning,

blessing and comforting,

teaching and reminding?

By promising to always

remember your Son,

do we invite you to always

be with us?
